Good idea. I wish I could have a dumb phone with only these simple things? Bluetooth 5.2, Spotify, internal 128gb storage,4g network and WiFi that's all. The best phone manufacturer would be Nokia.

@ashtonwomack So, so, so inspired with your experience, thanks for sharing! I'm waiting for my contract with telefon company to expire, still 10 long months, and I'll surely do this amazing change! I was born in 1970, so I remember when we had only land line phones (Croatia) and looking forward if I've some messages written on the paper card, exp. your friend will call you later on... Really amazing times, when we've exchanged our messages on the small piece of paper, writing diaries, waiting for photos to be developed... I definitely want that back! Without apps that are tracking every my step! Be blessed and continue to share and encourage us, love and respect from Croatia!

That is so interesting to listen to. And I think you're right on track me being an older gentleman that used to run around without a cell phone I used to be able to go to any place without a phone a natural directions that if I bend to one place I can get their back again without a map or GPS. Right now the internet has taken my brain away I no longer can be able to do creative things I have to look on UA-cam how to repair cars anyways I have been a automotive expert for 45 years. I have a story for you one time back long time ago I think it was around 2008. I decided to not have a phone for one year. All of my anxiety was gone life seen so much more peaceful and better then it was with a dumb phone!!!! Not even smartphone technology back then.. okay well I got my piece out that I wanted to say and now I feel extremely old like dinosaur old dirt. 😆😅😂

Question: You use a flip phone (not a smartphone). Do you still bring your smartphone with you in case you might need it, for example, if you turned up at a restaurant and the only way to access a menu was via a QR code?

I hate the way society is based on the assumption that everyone owns a phone. That is not true. In roughly a decade the dumb phone experiment will be borderline impossible. I say borderline impossible because someone might just about find a way to work around things.

  • @pixelgaming7261

I think the reason why she did the iPhone experiment was because for more people pulling back your phone usage is far easier than going cold turkey, so most people would pull their usage back first.

When you are listening to music, radio or podcasts around the house, use a smartspeaker. It doesn't have a screen on it so there's nothing to hook you.

I lacked self control and would delete apps, but then 5 hours later, redownload them. I realized it was a real problem. So I asked my husband to put child locks on my phone. I can’t download any apps myself. I have to have him enter a code to download anything. It has been amazing. I can still take photos, and still have GPS and email, but that’s really it. And I LOVE it. I’m 28, and won’t go back. It’s been almost a year now. I even found that I really enjoy gardening and have so much more free time without the endless scrolling on apps.

I did remove distracting apps, I had a gray scale for 6 months too, plus no notifications. It didn’t make a difference… yes, it reduced the time but sometimes I would literally check nothing. It’s so annoying!! So, I am going back to a flip phone - can’t wait!!

    • @Cynique_Noir

I agree Ive tried deleting, dedicated apps etc. you slowly start bringing stuff back and before you know it you're back to scrolling 3hrs a day

I never liked iPhone mostly because of the ui, but also because they are too restrictive. I struggled so much, just trying to change my ringtone to something custom. I think it's too hard to customize not just the apps but also the operating system. Being an android user, I found it helpful to use ADB (Android Debug Bridge) to permanently remove bloatware apps, as well as distracting apps. I removed samsung store and google Play Store from my phone, so I could never install something I don't want, and its the only solution that works because I physically need my computer to reinstall them. I recently was thinking about checking the dutch bros menu. I remembered I don't have a browser on my device, "no biggy, I'll just install it real quick from the Play Sto-- oh wait nevermind." Works like a charm, but it only works because I've been smartphone free for almost 2 years. Sometimes, you have to force yourself out of the funk you're in for a period of time. I do recommend that if intentional use of your smartphone is what you are aiming for, then switch out of an ecosystem that locks you in.

After 1 year and 10 months of using the Orchid Sunbeam F1, I am switching back to the smartphone, but not because I hated the experience. I'm getting ready to travel outside of the US for the very first time and there are going to be many struggles that I don't think I'm willing to overcome with a dumb phone alone. It made me realize that smartphones have their place when you need them. I loved my experience with my dumbphone and plan on switching between the lifestyles as I feel I need them, because I CAN. I initially switched to a dumbphone after I dropped my smartphone one day and cracked the screen. I felt SO HAPPY. When I was looking into getting another smartphone, I was just feeling dread. I listened to that feeling and I was ready to make the switch. It took a lot of outsourcing to make life work without, but it was worth it. What I feel now is excitement, because I'm CHOOSING to own a smartphone now. That was more important than I realized. I wanted to remind myself that the smartphone didn't have to be a necessity, that I can live without it. Now, it's a choice to live with convenience and I still have the choice to switch to simplicity when I feel like it. I learned that neither lifestyle is easy to maintain forever, but both will benefit a person. One in a while, we need a break from our devices to remind ourselves of what we are capable of doing, and once in a while, we need a break from the lack of conveniences so we can function easier in society.

I started following you because of your dumbphone. I also had a dumbphone, but only for a little over 3 months. I found myself spending too much time on my flip phone by simply sending a text message (T9 is the worst). I went back to my iPhone, heavily restricted it, and set a random number screentime passcode so I can't change the settings. I find it super interesting that you are a graphic designer and planner lover. I am currently in school to become a graphic designer and I used to sell planner PDF files in a shop on Etsy. You probably wont read this due to the lack of internet usage, but I just wanted to say "Hi" from a fellow designer 👋

So this is where I would get stuck with not having a smartphone- If I am out and about, get hungry and want to eat somewhere I've never ate before, I google the type of food I want in the area and decide from my options then have directions. How do I do that without a smartphone? I know there's obviously gps out there that isn't a smartphone but I can't imagine any of them have google to search for restaurants and such? Or maybe there are higher tech ones now.
